Is It Time to Renew Your Orthotics?

teal tennis shoe bottomsYour feet are the foundation of your body, so it’s crucial that they function well and feel great. That’s why at Ottawa Health: Performance and Rehabilitation, we offer orthotics, which are specially designed shoe inserts that can provide relief for a variety of foot-related conditions.

They are particularly effective for the following issues:

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a common condition characterized by inflammation and pain in the heel. Orthotics can help alleviate the symptoms by providing arch support and reducing strain on the plantar fascia.

Heel Spurs

Heel spurs are bony growths that develop on the heel bone. Shoe inserts can help distribute pressure evenly across the foot, reducing discomfort caused by heel spurs.

Flat Feet

Flat feet occur when the arch of the foot collapses or is not properly formed. Orthotics can provide the necessary support to help maintain proper foot alignment and alleviate associated pain.

Weakened Arches

Custom shoe inserts can be beneficial for individuals with weakened arches, providing the necessary support to reduce strain and discomfort.

Preventative Measures

Orthotics not only provide relief for existing conditions but can also be used as a preventative measure in many cases. They offer the following benefits:

  • Knee Pain Relief - When the ankle is unstable, it can increase stress on the knee joint, resulting in pain. Custom shoe inserts help stabilize the ankle, reducing knee pain caused by instability.
  • Prevention of ACL Injury – Individuals with collapsed arches are at a higher risk of ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury. Orthotics can help support the arches, reducing the risk of ACL injuries.
  • Chronic Low Back Pain Relief – Hyperextension of the knees can contribute to chronic low back pain. Orthotics can help correct foot positioning and alleviate strain on the lower back.

Why Renew Your Orthotics

It’s important to renew your orthotics periodically to ensure their effectiveness. Over time, the materials used in orthotics can weaken and lose their intended stiffness, reducing their ability to provide adequate support. Additionally, the fabric can harden, reproducing some of the problems you had before using orthotics. Changes in footwear may also require a different type of orthotic for optimal support.

When to Renew

The frequency of orthotic renewal varies from person to person and depends on wear and tear. It’s essential to consider your benefits coverage to limit financial stress when planning to renew your orthotics. Starting new activities that may require a different type of support is another factor to consider when deciding to renew your custom shoe inserts.
