Cupping Therapy in Ottawa

Cupping TherapyCupping is a vacuum therapy used for thousands of years and has its roots in China. It is also found in traditional medicine within Islam. This ancient technique increases blood circulation to the area where the cups are placed.

It’s used to tackle resistant pain, boost energy, alleviate muscle tension, and strengthen the immune system.

What to Expect

During a session, our cupping therapist Dr. Nivin Sharaf will place a cup on your skin and then heat it or suction it onto the skin. The cup is often heated with fire, using alcohol, herbs, or paper put directly into the cup. The fire source is removed, and the heated cup is placed with the open side on your skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a session take?

The length of a session depends on the purpose of the treatment and correction we
are trying to accomplish. Our appointments range from 30 minutes up to 120
minutes.

What should I expect after my session?

Because the suction force from the therapy breaks open small blood vessels under the skin, you will have round bruise-like marks. These will fade in a week or two.

Who shouldn’t get this therapy?

Because researchers don’t know much about the effects of this therapy on pregnancy, moms-to-be should not have cupping. You should also forego this therapeutic technique if you have bleeding disorders, blood clotting problems, or skin conditions including eczema or seizures.

Does it hurt to receive this type of therapy?

Though it shouldn’t be considered painful, the suction created during the therapy may result in temporary discomfort.

How long does it take to find relief from pain or symptoms using this technique?

Every condition varies in severity and therefore in treatment time. The time will differ depending on a person’s age and the amount of pain they are in. For example, some lower back pain in a younger person who is otherwise healthy will differ from an older person suffering from a degenerative disk disease and on multiple medications. The older the person, the more pain the person is in, the longer the sessions may take.
