Knee Pain Treatment in Ottawa

hands grasping knee in painThe knee is a complex joint that is crucial in our daily movements, so it needs to function optimally. If you’re experiencing discomfort in your knees, it’s important to identify the origin of the pain. At Ottawa Health: Performance and Rehabilitation, we categorize discomfort into different types to better understand its causes:

  • Sports/Activity-Related: This type of knee pain is typically caused by physical activity. Whether it occurred during exercise or within a sport, you can recall the exact moment when the discomfort started. Injuries like meniscus or ligament strains are common in this category.
  • Contact-Related: This category involves a direct impact on the knee, either by landing on it or being hit near the knee. These injuries may result in fractures, bursitis, or other types of injuries.
  • Unknown: Some pain arises without a clear cause. It often starts mildly and progressively worsens over time. Symptoms may include discomfort while sitting for prolonged periods and grinding or clicking sensations with movement.

What Pain Location Means

Above the Knee Cap: Discomfort in this area could indicate conditions like quadriceps tendinopathy, bursitis, etc.

Below the Knee Cap: Pain in this area may be due to patellar tendonitis, bursitis, Osgood-Schlatter disease, or other related issues.

Outer Knee: This type of discomfort may suggest an injury to the lateral meniscus, iliotibial band syndrome, lateral collateral ligament strain, or other possibilities.

Inside Knee: Pain on the inner side of the knee may indicate a medial meniscus injury, medial collateral ligament strain, ACL injury, or similar conditions.

Around the Knee Cap: This often points to patellofemoral pain syndrome, arthritis, or related issues.

Our Natural Approach

When you visit our practice for knee pain, our expert chiropractors and physiotherapists will conduct a thorough evaluation, which may include assessing your hips and ankles as well. Underlying issues in these areas can often manifest as knee problems. To address your discomfort, we offer the following:

Chiropractic Care

Using tools like joint manipulation, acupuncture, deep tissue therapy, and instrument-assisted soft tissue therapy, we will work to correct these imbalances and alleviate discomfort.

Physiotherapy

After taking a detailed history of the incident to understand the cause of your injury, our physiotherapists will identify muscular differences and weakened regions that are contributing to your knee pain.

We will then prescribe exercises tailored to strengthen the injured tissues and facilitate a return to normal function. Additional therapies such as acupuncture, RockTape/Kintape for pain relief, proprioceptive and strengthening exercises, and tissue release therapy may also be included.
