What Is It?

The GLA:D® (Good Life with Osteoarthritis: Denmark) program is an educational and group exercise program that has helped thousands of people with hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA) manage their symptoms of pain and loss of function by promoting physical independence through exercise.

This program reflects the latest research and has been developed based on feedback from those living with OA, as well as healthcare professionals, who work with these individuals. The GLA:D® program, therefore, provides a research-supported approach that works in the real world! At Ottawa Health: Performance and Rehabilitation, we prioritize research proven options!

In essence, the exercise sessions are supervised by a doctor and taught so that you learn to incorporate them into your everyday activities. This enables you to easily continue managing your symptoms and remain more active.
  • Results-driven: data gathered from program participants report less pain, reduced use of painkillers, fewer individuals on sick leave, and being more physically active.
  • Doctor-led: Dr. Christine Rad, our chiropractor, is with you from start to finish. She is a valuable resource for you on your journey to better health and function!
  • Group environment: work on your health with your peers and those who are going through the same challenges as you. This is often said to be helpful guidance and motivation!
  • Research-supported: GLA:D Canada collects data on all their participants to continually add to their database and results. This program is built on repeated and proven results.
  • Whole-person care: At Ottawa Health: Performance and Rehabilitation we treat the whole person and offer several complimentary services you can access immediately, such as massage therapy, custom braces and joint supports, pain relieving products, supplements, nutritional counseling and more!
  • A mandatory assessment by our program lead Chiropractor, Dr. Christine Rad who will gather baseline information about your current functional abilities and ensure you are a good candidate for the program
  • Each participant is entered on the GLA:D™ Canada registry for participation. Your personal information is private and confidential. You may continue other treatments alongside the GLAD program, such as physiotherapy, chiropractic care, physician prescriptions, orthotics, etc.
  • Two 60-minute education sessions held virtually with the other participants. These are intended to teach you all about osteoarthritis, including: symptoms, risk factors of osteoarthritis, treatment and self-management options, as well as tips on how to overcome everyday challenges
  • Twelve 60-minute exercise sessions that will help you improve posture, build strength, increase confidence and ability to apply these exercises in everyday activities.  Each participant is monitored and exercise difficulty is progressed on an individual basis. This program is designed to meet you where you are and improve your abilities in a graduated manner.

Here are the statistics from others who have gone through the program:

  • Over 83% of patients find the program beneficial or very beneficial
  • 90% of patients use the education at least once per week
  • Over half of patients report a clinical meaningful change in their function and quality of life
  • Approximately 70% show significant improvement in their function
