Temporomandibular Joints and
Jaw Pain Care in Ottawa

person with jaw painThe temporomandibular joint, abbreviated TMJ, is a critical hinge joint that connects the lower jaw or mandible to the skull. Everyone has two temporomandibular joints, one located on either side of the head in front of the ears. These joints allow you to move your jaws when talking, chewing, and yawning.

Sometimes, the proper function of the temporomandibular joint may be compromised for one reason or another. In this case, one is said to be experiencing temporomandibular disorders or TMD. TMD symptoms include pain in the neck, ear, and facial areas, locked jaw, clicking or popping sounds when opening or shutting your mouth, jaw stiffness, toothaches, headaches, and sleep apnea.

What Causes Temporomandibular Disorders?

It’s usually tricky to pinpoint the exact cause of temporomandibular disorders, as multiple factors may play a role in triggering the dysfunction of this joint. Underlying health conditions such as arthritis can also make you more susceptible to developing temporomandibular disorders. Trauma to the joint, habitual teeth grinding, and congenital jaw problems can also increase your risk of experiencing temporomandibular joint problems.

Some other factors that can contribute to temporomandibular disorders include poor posture, sleep problems, use of orthodontic braces, prolonged stress coupled with inadequate coping mechanisms, and poor diet.

Temporomandibular disorders can result in excruciating pain and must be addressed as soon as they’re detected.
