Concussion Treatment in Ottawa

upset man in wreckYou might have heard the term “concussion” before, but what does it mean?

The term “concussion” comes from a word that means “to shake.” Nowadays, we know that concussions happen when the head or body gets hit, and this makes the brain inside shake and hit against the skull’s walls. Motor vehicle accidents, falls, and sports injuries are common causes of this type of traumatic brain injury (TBI).

But surprisingly, concussions can occur even if the head isn’t directly hurt. Anything that suddenly moves the brain, like slipping on ice without hitting your head, can cause a concussion.

It’s good to know that concussion symptoms can be quite different from person to person. The most important thing for effectively treating this type of TBI is to carefully check for the affected functions and weaknesses and then make a plan to treat those problems specifically.

What Are the Symptoms?

Many different symptoms can arise from a concussion; these may include:

  • Dizziness
  • Noise sensitivity
  • Nausea
  • Tiredness
  • Mental fog
  • Headaches
  • Blurry and/or double vision
  • Mood disturbances
  • Irritability
  • Many others

Concussion Management at Ottawa Health: Performance and Rehabilitation

Our physiotherapists take care of concussions by focusing on the body system that has been affected the most. Different systems of the body can be impacted by a TBI, such as:

  • Cognitive system
  • Vestibular system
  • Ocular system
  • Physical system
  • Emotional system

A complete evaluation will help us determine which areas have been most impacted. Once we understand what’s not working properly, we’ll create a plan to treat those specific issues. We might include oculomotor training, balance and coordination, light exercises, cognitive tasks, and physical therapy during each therapy session.

Besides the rehabilitation component, at Ottawa Health: Performance and Rehabilitation, we have a whole team that can assist with other areas of your recovery. Our chiropractors and massage therapists come in when physical issues need more hands-on treatment. This may include chiropractic manipulations, soft tissue therapy, acupuncture, massage therapy, and much more.
